The aggression and force of the boxer’s punch, the powerful athlete engaged in the ultimate
duel- these elements begged to be portrayed in the splash and energy of oil on linen. And
what better fight to portray than Ali vs. Forman? The first appearance of Ali’s rope-a-dope
had a stronger, younger Forman confused and worn down, as Ali’s stature went from
parallel on the ropes and leaning almost into the crowd to delivering a vicious right hand that
decisively knocked the heavily favored Forman out.
As a boxing fan, I have wanted for some time to portray the action, emotion and physical
destruction of a professional fighter’s punch. With extensive research into the actual match
on October 30, 1974, Impact was born. The painting is a departure from my usual portrait
style in realism to a more intense application of color to invite the viewer on a journey – not
to replicate the event or the person of Ali, but to engender understanding through a vivid
influence of reds, blues and yellow of the actual IMPACT of a knockout blow.

Laila Ali 18"x 30" Original Oil by: Jace McTier

There are very few athletes in the world who have dominated their sport the way Laila Ali
has. You would never guess what her profession is, much less the tenacity of her fighting
style-by her outward appearance. To visually communicate her “fire and ice” persona in oils,
illuminating the dichotomy of Laila Ali, became my goal.
While Laila’s tireless work with the many youth and women’s organizations highlights the
inner woman, the training inherent in the demanding realm of boxing brings out the focus of
the well-trained athlete. As I painted The Beauty versus The Contender, I discovered - the
passion in her eyes is the same.
